So What Aircraft are Allowed? (FAQ)

In general sense, only fixed-wing, rotary-wing or tiltrotor aircraft that are (or were) legally operated by an armed service of some sort are allowed to fly on the server. Unfortunately, with the broad array of different aircraft addons, It is sometimes difficult to determine whether a certain aircraft or livery (paint) of an aircraft is allowed on the server. This page was made in hopes that it may clear some confusion.

How does CFOS know what aircraft players are flying? Doesn't aircraft substitution confuse the admins?

CFOS admins determine what aircraft people are flying by looking at the player list in the Briefing Room of the server. The aircraft name shown in the list is called the sim title of the aircraft, and is set in the aircraft.cfg of the aircraft they are flying. Own user aircraft sim titles are shown at the top of the Briefing Room in the first section. Do NOT rely on the aircraft name in the Change (Multiplayer) Room as this is the general aircraft type and not what CFOS or other players will see as your aircraft sim title.

Some aircraft may have a sim title longer than is what is shown in the box of the Briefing Room. This can create a lot of confusion for CFOS admins as it my not show the aircraft type or paint scheme they are using in the session. This can (and has) led admins to wrongly ejecting players out of the session under reasonable but incorrect judgement. Sim titles longer than 24 characters (including spaces) will be cut off to other players in the aircraft title row of the Briefing Room player list.

Unfortunately due to the fact that it may mess up the substitution of your aircraft to other players, we highly recommend not editing the sim title of your aircraft. Sim titles play a large part in the FSX:SE aircraft substitution logic, and could end up making other users see your aircraft substituted as another aircraft, even if they have the exact same one.

Instead, you should fly another aircraft with a sim title that clearly states the aircraft type and paint scheme if possible.

One more thing; Some aircraft types may not be recognizable to some admins, as there are hundreds upon hundreds of past and present aircraft that have served in military's of the world. This is fixed with a quick wikipedia.com (yes, we use wiki) search to determine if the the aircraft is a military variant and apt to fly in the particular session.

My aircraft does not exist IRL, but it has military markings. Can I use it?

All fictional aircraft (whether totally fake or realistic looking) are NOT allowed on the server. Only real-world aircraft operated by a military may be spawned. CFOS tries to make its servers feeling as real as possible when it comes to military aircraft operating together.

My aircraft is used by a military but is not the military variant. So I can fly it right?

WRONG. Although there are some limited exceptions to this, aircraft that are private or commercially flown are not allowed.

Some examples are the Boeing 737-800 and the King Air 350. The United States Navy operates 737's under the designation P-8A. It is designed for Naval anti-submarine warfare and cargo transport. We don't want to see a Southwest 737 performing these types of operations on the server. Again, CFOS tries to make its sessions feel like players are flying in a full military environment.

The King Air 350 is flown under the designation C-12, and is used for various duties, from light cargo/passenger transport, to military surveillance missions and medical evacuations. Again, it would ruin the feel if a private King Air was landing at a military base.

Ok.. So I'll just edit the sim title of my aircraft to the military type designation, then I'll be able to fly it... right?

NO. Players would still see you as the same aircraft paint AND you're still flying the same aircraft type that's not allowed on the server.

My aircraft is being tested/experimented but under the supervision of a military. Is it allowed?

This one is a doozy. Ultimately, If the aircraft is in its test phase, it can be allowed. Again, this rule is a weird one, if you are unsure about your aircraft being allowed, contact player id Heater or CFOS in the game chat.

How 'Bout NASA?

Former and current military aircraft operated by NASA are allowed on the server, as the pilots flying them and the aircraft themselves, are a part of the U.S. military.

I have a military aircraft with a paint scheme of a different military/branch. Is it allowed?

When it comes down to it, no. It is not allowed. But again, this rule can be lenient as many, many factors revolve around this.

Although this is a very strict server, even we think that there is a point where going into extremely fine detail about a texture being incorrect is going too far. If It is a U.S. Marine helicopter with a generic U.S. Marine paint scheme, it is fine to fly on the server.

I made my own military paint scheme for an aircraft. Its all correct, but I haven't uploaded it anywhere. Can I use it?

Yes, that is fine. Although we encourage you to upload it on a flight simulator site for others to use, it is still ok to fly on the server.
